WAS BORN ON JUNE 7, 2000. THREE DAYS LATER WE WERE TOLD THEY WANTED TO TEST HIM FOR DOWN
SYNDROME. IT TOOK A WHILE TO SINK IN. TWENTY-FOUR HOURS AFTER HE WAS BORN HE WAS
TRANSFERED ACROSS TOWN TO ANOTHER HOSPITAL. THERE HE STAYED IN THE NEONATAL UNIT FOR TWO
AND HALF WEEKS. THINGS GOT BETTER ONCE I GOT OUT OF THE HOSPITAL AND COULD GO VISIT HIM.
HE WAS BORN WITH PNEUMONIA, SEVERAL HEART PROBLEMS, AND REQUIRED OXGYEN. LUCKILY HE
WEIGHED FIVE POUNDS, ONE ONCE, WHICH WAS A DECENT WEIGHT. NOW, HE IS TWO MONTHS OLD AND IS
DOING GREAT. HIS HEART HAS GOTTEN BETTER, ALTHOUGH HE STILL HAS A MURMUR AND A SMALL HOLE
BETWEEN THE BOTTOM TWO CHAMBERS OF THE HEART. HE'S GAINING WEIGHT AND IS A VERY ACTIVE
BABY. WE HAVE JUST STARTED HIS EARLY INTERVENTION PROGRAM, AND I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO
LEARNING WITH HIM. HE HAS AN OLDER SISTER WHO IS FOUR, HER NAME IS HALLE'. I'M JUMPING
AROUND HERE, BUT IT FEELS GREAT TO HAVE SOMEONE TO TELL MY STORY TO WHO CAN RELATE. THE
DOCTOR WANTS TO HAVE HIS CHROMOSOME STUDY RERUN. HIS FIRST STUDY WAS DONE IN THE NICU, THE

Comments: Great info!! We think it's great to be able to share with other families
that have a special child...all children are special and some have more needs than others.
We have a daughter named Jessica who is 6 yrs old and Nicholas, who is 2 1/5 yrs old, has
Down Syndrome. We found out at birth that Nicholas had DS and also a heart defect. He had
a heart operation when he was 4 months old and has been well since. Some days are good and
some more difficult; it is nice to be able to share special stories with other families

Comments: I am a Learning Support Assistant in a primary school and I support a
child with learning difficulties who is 5 years old. We also have in our class a boy, also
aged 5, who has Downs Syndrome. He is a lovely little boy and pleasure to know. Although I
work in a mainstream school some children with special needs are included and, with the
right support, I think this is a good thing for both the child and his peers. I am also
attending college once a week to learn more about special needs and am presently writing
an assignment on Downs Syndrome. I have read that children who are included in primary
mainstream school do well, although I understand that some secondary schools are more
reluctant to include them. This is due mainly, I think, to the lack of training and time.
I believe that they should all be trained in some area of special needs and with trained
support assistants a lot more children can be included. Still we seem to be going in the
right direction and I hope it wont be too long before Fabio will be able to benefit from
the same rights as other children. Good luck. |

Comments: I have never had any experience with DS children until I volunteered at
the Houston Special Olympics. My daughter Aimee, who is only 11 years old, sings and
performs regularly at different shows around the Houston area. One year, I volunteered to
bring her to the Olympics with me to sing for the athletes while I worked the concession
stand. She experienced what would turn out to be the most fulfilling and important
"gig" she has ever had. There she met the most wonderful, loving people she has
ever encountered. She has now performed at the Houston Special Olympics for the past 3
years, and this year is traveling to Arlington, Texas to perform there. She has branched
out to the various local Special Olympics as well. She has begun to bring her friends out
with her to volunteer their time too, as it's the only way we know to share your special
children with others. It's parents and families like you who teach DS children that
special unconditional love that those athletes have shown my daughter and her friends. We
owe that opportunity and thanks to you who are not afraid to let the world know how

born in 1996 and Megan was born this year, January 29. At first, like you, it was very
hard to adjust to and when God blessed us with another grandchild with Down Syndrome it
was even harder. They have made a huge difference in my life and I can't imagine life
without them. Andrew goes to pre-school half days, five days a week. He had open heart
surgery when he was 6 months old. To look at him you won't know he even had surgery other
than the taletell surgical scar down the middle of his little chest. Megan was also born
with a heart defect and will have to have surgery this year. She's 9 weeks old now and she
finally gained 13 ozs. for the first time. Up until today she maintained her birth weight
of 8 lb. 1 oz. I don't feel sorry for myself, I only feel sorry for my daughter because
she'll never know the joy of having grandchildren like me and all the joy that they add to
a person's life. |

Angst bekam, ich wußte nicht was mich erwartet... Ich hatte keinerlei Erfahrung und wenn
mich jemand gefragt hat warum ich das machen möchte, konnte ich nur sagen: Ich weiß es
nicht, ich will eben. Ich konnte mir selber nicht erklären wie ich nun darauf kam, es hat
mich interessiert und ich wollte es probieren. Im Vorstellungsgepräch habe ich vollkommen
selbstbewußt dagesessen, ich war von mir und der sache vollkommen überzeugt, habe so
getan als hätte ich Ahnung und wüßte was ich hier mache. Allerdings war das überhaupt
nicht der Fall. Ich kam mir furchtbar schäbig vor als ich von den anderen Bewerbern
hörte. Sie hatten alle schon Erfahrung, kannten sich aus, wußten über alles Bescheid
und schauten mich merkwürdig an...Vielleicht habe ich es mir auch nur eingebildet, aber
so fühlte ich mich. Als dann der Tag kam an dem es losgehen sollte, wollte ich fast
kneifen. Ich bin aufgestanden, hatte Bauchschmerzen, meiner Mutter am Frühstückstisch
fast den letzten Nerv geraubt. Ich glaubte es nicht durchzuziehen und ging mit dem
Gedanken aus dem Haus:"Egal, wenn es dir nicht gefällt, oder du es nicht kannst dann
gehst du wieder und machst was anderes." Eigentlich weiß ich, dass dies eine
vollkommen falshe einstellung ist zu seinem ersten Arbeitstag aufzubrechen, aber ich hatte
sie nunmal. Wenn ich heute daran denke, dann bin ich heilfroh, dass ich nicht gleich
wieder gegangen bin. Aber wer könnte schon einfach wieder gehen wenn ein kleines Mädchen
mit langen schwarzen Haaren, Augen die so sehr funkeln, kleinen Ohren die so viel hören
wollen und einem unbeschwerten Lachen, bei dem man einfach mitlachen muß. Und wenn dieses
Mädchen einen dann auch noch in den Arm nimmt wobei man das Gefühl hatte vor
Herzlichkeit was zerdrückt zu werden. Ich konnte es jedenfalls nicht ! Jeder neue Tag an
dem ich in der Sonderschule arbeite erfahre ich etwas neues. Natürlich ist es manchmal
anstrengend, denn sie sind ganz schön clever und wissen genau wie man jemanden auf die
Palme bringen kann. Man muß schon oft die Nerven beisammen halten. Ich habe aber noch nie
zuvor Menschen gesehen die sich so freuen können, auf eine Art Danke sagen die ich vorher
nicht kannte und das niedlichste ICH HAB DICH LIEB sagen können, bei dem ich jedesmal
aufpassen muß nicht loszuheulen. Ich bin nun erst ein halbes Jahr dabei, mache meine
Ausbildung zur Heilerzieherin und kann mir nichts anderes vorstellen. GUT DAS ICH NICHT
GEKNIFFEN HABE! Mehr wollte ich eigentlich nicht sagen. |

Dec.21 1995.He was born at full term and we found out that he had Down's about a mouth
after he was born.He wieghed 5lbs 7oz at birth.He didn't have any problams when he was

turning 3 in July of this year.Nicholas is a very happy and out going child.At this time

Pierre ist jetzt bald 3 Jahre alt und macht erstaunliche fortschritte, womit wir nie
gerechnet haben. Auch Pierre war das 1. Lebensjahr sehr viel krank bis zur
Lungenentzündung. Aber seit 2 Jahren bekommt er Homöopathische Unterstützung, und
seitdem hat er mal einen kurzen Schnupfen oder Husten, aber nichts dramatisches mehr. Toll

Meine Freundin Regula arbeitet in der Stiftung Lebenshilfe in Reinach/AG und ist
Sozialpädagogin in Ausbildung. Selber war ich dort stellvertretender Geschäftsführer,
heute arbeite ich im Bereich von Internetwerbung. Es freut mich immer wieder Seiten von
Menschen mit Down Syndrom im Internet zu finden. Was lernst Du im Moment so in Schule?
Hast Du einen Hund oder eine Katze? Wir haben einen kleinen Hund der heisst Strolchi und
macht viel Schabernack. Er geht auch oft mit zum Arbeiten und unterhaltet dort das ganze
Wohnhaus. Finde es echt cool, dass Du in Florida warst selber war ich noch nie dort. Wie
gings so mit dem Fliegen hattest Du kein Mulmiges Gefühl im Bauch so hoch über den

Comments: My mom came home one day and told me that one of here good friends was
going to have a baby! I was so happy for here. Then about 9 weeks after the new baby was
born, they found out it had Downs. I felt so bad, there was nothing that i couls say or do
untill about 2 months after. I was sitting in Biology and my teacher told us that we were
going to have to pick a diease to do a report on. All i could theink of was, great here i
go again, I know that I will hate this one, but then I thought abotu my moms friend. I new
that I had to do Downs. It was the perferct time. So I have been research and all I can
really say it that it warms that I can make a difference. So I am thinking at volenteering
or going over to someones house to help them with their Down Syndrom child.Good luck with

Comments: I just wanted to let you know I think it is a wonderful idea for your son
to have a web page. We have two children, a girl and a boy. They both were born with
Down's Syndrome. We had all the genetic testing and doctors' recommendations, etc before
our son was even conceived. We went through the testing before he was born. Our situation
is sort of unusual and interesting to most people. We do not know many families with boys
who have Down's Syndrome and I just felt like I should contact you. If you would like to
share experiences, joys, expectations, or anything else, please e-mail us. Our daughter is
21years old and our son is 13 years old. Our daughter will graduate from a local high
school this year and is beginning a job program here in our city. Our son just began

Comments: These children and young adults teach us about the little things in life
and how very important they are. Our seven year old with Trisomy 21 is recently recovering
from leukemia (ALL). She did not have any of the other medical problems associated with
Trisomy 21, not even low muscle tone, so the diagnosis of leukemia was terrifying,
however, she has undertgone three years of chemotherapy and associated treatment and is
doing well. Keep up the good work. God Bless! |

12 ounces. We not only learned a lot during my pregnancy which was full of
complications...but after she was born we were told she has Down Syndrome. So, we are
learning a lot of new information. The most difficult hurdle is helping her father deal
with many issues. This is his first child, and he was not prepared for fatherhood to begin
with. He moved out when he found out I was pregnant. He was surprisingly supportive and
extremely excited when she was born. However, when the doctor's at the hospital told us
that she had Down Syndrome, it destroyed so much inside of him. He has not been able to
hold her since. He can barely even get up the strength to look at her. He does not know
how to handle this information yet. For me, I was merely concerned with the common health
problems that usually come along with Downs. Luckily for little Cassidy Elizabeth Buscher
Allen, her heart is healthy and no health problems have been detectible. Perhaps, you
could help me to understand, from a father's point of view, how you handled the beginning
stages of learning about Downs and loving your child. I want to get Cassidy's father,
Rich, involved as soon as possible. He is a very loving man, who is just having a
difficult time right now. Many family and friends give me their viewpoint of how to handle
helping Rich...but no one can fully understand until they've walked in his shoes. Thank

Eurer homepage gelandet. Du bist wirklich ein ganz besonderes Kind, ja ganz genau wie ich.
Ich heiße Yannah , leide unter spastischer Tetraparese und bin statomotorisch und geistig
retardiert. Was das heißt , kann ich Dir auch nicht sagen. Es ist für mich nicht
wichtig. Ich bin nicht wie ich sein sollte - ich bin wie ich bin. Ich kann zwar nicht
laufen, dafür lache ich gerne. Ich kann zwar nicht so schnell denken, aber dafür schmuse
ich unheimlich gerne. Als ich zwei Jahre alt war, habe ich mir meine " richtige
Familie" ausgesucht. Eltern, die mich genauso haben wollten wie ich eben bin, und
gleich drei ältere Geschwister dazu. Ich gehe inzwischen in die 7. Klasse, Ich bin immer
noch nicht wie ich sein sollte, ich bin eben wie ich bin. Geistig und statomotorisch
retardiert. Was das bedeutet, ist mir immer noch nicht wichtig. Meine Familie meint, ich
sei etwas ganz Besonderes, und wenn es mich nicht gäbe, dann müßte man mich erfinden.
Aber es gibt mich, Gott sei Dank !! Hallo Fabio, Du siehst genauso aus, wie die Hauptfigur
aus meinem Lieblingsbuch " Albin Jonathan ". Das ist auch ein Junge mit dem Down
Syndrom. Kennst Du das Buch. Mach´s gut, viele Grüße von Yannah und der ganzen Familie.
