Fabio was born on June 7, 1991. Three days later we were told that he had a genetic disorder known as 'Trisomy 21' or 'Down Syndrome'. The first few weeks were very hard and scary. Fortunately, Fabio had no typical Down Syndrome medical problems. He had just an extremely low muscle tone. |
| At the age of two months, we
started with physiotherapy and once a week, an early intervention therapist worked with
Fabio at home. At the age of 5 years, Fabio entered the local Kindergarten and spent two
years, supported once a week by his early intervention therapist, playing and learning
with 'normal' children. Today Fabio goes to a school for special need children where he
gets all the necessary therapies. In Switzerland special need children are not being
included in schools as in the United States or in many other European countries. There is
still a long way to go and many fights to fight for our special need children. From the very beginning, we loved our special little boy very much. Fabio has two sisters, Tanja born in 1989 and Elena born in 1994 and we count it such a blessing to have Fabio in our family. Fabio taught us a lot about love and what is really important in life. |
